Flying: the fast, normal way
A direct flight from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo takes around an hour and runs several times a day on multiple airlines. It is the way almost every guest arrives, whether they are meeting a private yacht charter or joining a group boat. Book a morning flight where you can. Afternoon departures from Bali occasionally shift or delay, and you do not want to lose a night of your charter to a missed connection.

The bali to komodo island ferry
A public ferry does run between Bali and Labuan Bajo, and it is the budget option for backpackers with time to spare. The crossing takes well over 24 hours, calls at several ports along the way, and the schedule is not built around tourist convenience. It suits someone doing an open ended overland trip through Flores. It does not suit anyone with a fixed number of holiday days, since a delay of even half a day eats directly into your time in the park.
If the idea of arriving by boat rather than by air appeals to you, the better version of that idea is not the public ferry. It is sailing the last stretch, or the whole way, on a private yacht.
Sailing from Bali to Komodo on a charter

This is a different holiday from a standard Komodo loop: expect five to seven nights of genuine open water sailing, quiet anchorages that day trippers never reach, and a slower, more immersive pace. This route is not for everyone. It costs more nights of charter than flying straight to Labuan Bajo and starting there, and it means more time at sea for guests who get queasy. But for repeat visitors, or anyone who wants Komodo to feel like an expedition rather than a long weekend, it is worth the extra days.
Weighing time against experience
For a first trip of three to five nights, flying to Labuan Bajo and starting your charter there is the sensible choice. It puts you inside the national park on day one instead of losing days to transit. Save the sailing route for a longer holiday, or for a second visit when you already know Komodo's greatest hits and want to see the coast in between.
Whichever way you arrive, build in a buffer. A missed connection on the way to a charter with a fixed start date is the single most avoidable disappointment in this kind of trip. Fly in a day early if your schedule allows it, especially in shoulder months when weather can shift flight times.
