Flores' best known inland sight is Kelimutu, a volcano near Ende with three crater lakes that sit side by side, each a different colour, best seen at sunrise. Further west, the highland town of Bajawa is a base for visiting traditional Ngada villages with their distinctive conical thatched roofs and ancestor shrines. Both are reachable by road from Labuan Bajo, though the distances are real: expect long, scenic drives rather than short hops between stops. Along the way, the road passes rice terraces, coffee growing hills and small towns that see relatively few visitors compared with the harbour you started from, which is much of the appeal of doing this leg by road rather than skipping straight to the boat.
