Price ranges across the fleet
Smaller, simpler phinisi start from around $1,750 to $5,000 a night and typically carry two to six cabins, suiting couples, small groups or families who do not need a large boat. Mid-range boats, roughly $6,000 to $15,000 a night, tend to have more cabins, better crew ratios and more onboard amenities like dive centres or air-conditioned saloons. At the top end, larger expedition vessels and the most established phinisi run from $20,000 up toward $55,000 a night, built for bigger groups, multiple generations travelling together, or guests who want the highest specification of finish and crew.
What sits outside the nightly rate
Government and marine park fees are charged per guest, on top of the boat rate, and vary by destination and by how many national parks your route enters. Alcohol beyond a boat's included soft drinks, specialist diving beyond a basic snorkel and mask, and flights to and from your embarkation port are also usually separate. How group size changes the cost per person
Because rates are quoted per boat, filling every cabin is the single biggest lever on cost per person. A boat priced at $6,000 a night with six cabins costs roughly $500 per cabin per night if every cabin is full, but closer to $3,000 per cabin if only two are taken. This is worth factoring in when comparing a smaller boat at full capacity against a larger one with several empty cabins, since the larger boat can sometimes work out cheaper per person despite the higher headline rate.
When rates run higher or lower
Demand shifts through the year, and rates on individual boats can move with it. School holiday periods, Christmas and New Year, and the peak weeks of each region's season tend to see the least flexibility on price and the earliest boats sell out, particularly the larger, more established yachts. Shoulder periods within a season, early in the Komodo dry season or late in the Raja Ampat window, sometimes bring more room to negotiate or a wider choice of boats still open at short notice. None of this is guaranteed each year, so treat it as a general pattern rather than a rule when timing your enquiry.
